New Year Clear Intentions: My Focus as a Virtual Assistant

It’s that time of the year again when we start to think of some intentions that we will (hopefully!) stick to and work towards over the course of 2026.  Here are some of the intentions I will be working towards to achieve the best for myself, and my VA business…

  • Step away from the screen

2025 has shown me that taking time away from my desk, whether for a cup of tea or a breath of fresh air, is incredibly important for keeping my engagement and focus throughout the working day.  It’s a skill to be able to recognise when you need a ‘brain break’ to ensure you remain productive, especially when working remotely without the usual ‘office tea break’ to remind you to step away from the screen!

  • Refining Systems

Refining processes and building stronger, more efficient systems has become a key focus this year. Streamlining workflows, improving organisation, and creating repeatable systems not only support consistency and clarity but also free up time for creativity and growth.  By being intentional with structure, communication, and the tools I use, it’s possible to work smarter, adapt faster, and provide greater value across every project and client I support.

  • Organisation

Due to my background in teaching, I’m a keen enthusiast for new stationery.  A new year means a new diary, and a good excuse to get stuck in and re-evaluate what’s working for me, what isn’t working, and see what exciting events I have coming up for the year.  As VA work means I largely work remotely, I enjoy getting out and meeting with clients, and feel motivated when I see these bookings begin to fill up my diary.  An organised diary is an organised mind!

  • Continue to prioritise a good work life balance

It’s easy to let remote work blur the lines between VA life and personal life, especially when there are deadlines to meet, or things feel busier than usual.  This year, I am trying to draw a definitive line between work and personal time – that means shutting my office door at the end of the day, and not re-opening it until I begin work again the following morning. Sometimes those bothersome work-related thoughts creep in even when we’re away from our desks – like wondering, ‘did I send that email?’  It’s a feeling every VA knows, and one we’ve learned to manage with solid systems in place.  When these thoughts begin to make themselves known, it’s important to take a deep breath, and remind yourself that 99% of issues can be sorted or resolved in working hours.  Enjoy your personal life, and you will feel revitalised when the working week rolls around again – this is the definition of a good work-life balance!

  • Commit to education

We live in an ever-developing, ever-changing world, and this often means having to adapt to new practices in the VA-sphere.  I will be dedicating a few hours a week to learning a new skill, educating myself and coming to grips with an idea or concept new to me and my work.  2025 introduced me to the workings of AI, and demonstrated how embracing change brings opportunity.  New objectives can be beneficial to you and your business, and adopting a growth mindset is top of my list for 2026.

  • Continue to provide my clients with a top rate service

2025 was a year of highs, consisting of spending a lot of time connecting with clients, and providing them with a service that I am proud to deliver.  I am manifesting more of this in 2026!

High-quality, dependable support comes from more than skill alone; it’s the result of a business designed with structure, efficient systems, and thoughtful organisation at its core, all while keeping the client’s needs and experience at the centre of everything.
